Construction students from all parts of the United Kingdom compete for the annual SkillBuild Awards, organised by Construction Skills. The winners of regional heats in a wide range of construction skills, including the Company’s three crafts, compete for these awards at the national finals which are held in a different part of the country each year.
The Tylers and Bricklayers Company make the following awards to the winner in each of its the three craft categories:
The E & R Fuller Award for bricklaying
The Mason-Elliott Award for roof slating and tiling
The Montgomery Award for wall and floor tiling
Each of these Awards comprises a cheque for £750, the Company’s engraved Silver Medal and a framed certificate. Every two years WorldSkills (formerly the International Skills Olympics) takes place in a different part of the world. Though not limited to construction skills, this competition does include bricklaying and wall and floor tiling.
Each participating country is allowed one competitor in each skill category. Team UK, managed by UK Skills, has a proud record in the competition and a British competitor who wins the Gold Medal in one of its crafts also receives a Special Award from the Tylers and Bricklayers Company.
As part of its link with the Corps of Royal Engineers, the Company each year the Senior (Class 1) and Junior (Class 2) Sapper construction trainees who achieve the highest marks for the course, of which bricklaying is a key element, at the Royal School of Military Engineering, Chatham, with its Stokes Royal Engineers Award. The two winners each receive a cheque for £750, the Company’s engraved Silver Medal and a certificate.
Although not craft-related, the Company’s link with the Sappers is further demonstrated by its annual Awards to the Best Cadet and the Best Adult Volunteer in the Royal Engineers Army Cadet Force, London.
The winners of all these awards are invited to receive them at the Company’s Annual Craft Awards Luncheon at one of the City of London livery Halls. A report of the 2015 Craft Awards is available here, and the 2016 Luncheon is reported here.
