Relieving Arch:
Definition:

Usually a two ring segmental arch built within a wall over a flat lintel, of wood or stone, to transmit loads to either side of an opening and so relieve the lintel. The arch is built over a Turning Piece supported by wedges resting on the lintel; when the whole brick structure has been allowed to set this temporary support is removed and the space filled in with a core of brickwork.
