Gauged Arch:
Definition:

Work of the highest quality; an arch built with soft red bricks known as Rubbers. These bricks are made oversize so that they may be cut and shaped to accurate dimensions and rubbed to produce a smooth and even textured surface. Their finished accuracy allows them to be bedded in lime putty to give a fine white 3mm joint. Normally built in-situ but may also be pre-formed, on a backing, and lifted into position.
