Used to construct low cost walls by laying the bricks on edge where strength or appearance is not important. A variety of bonding arrangements can be used; a 225mm hollow wall can be built by placing alternate stretchers with headers that tie across the wall. Low cost pre-war houses sometimes used this construction for the sides with normal face work for front elevations.
