Visit to Queens' College, Cambridge

For the first event of our new Master’s year, we are paying a visit to Cambridge at the invitation of Dr James Campbell, the Seear Fellow in Architecture and the History of Art at Queens’. Dr Campbell gave us an entertaining and illuminating talk earlier this year in connection with the launch of our new Company history and he will tell us something of the background to the College, founded around 1450, and its buildings (predominantly in brick) and give us a guided tour of the College including the principal older buildings and some more recent work: we shall see some parts (including the President’s Lodge) that are not normally open to the public.
We will end with lunch in a private dining room in the College.

We will gather at 10.30 for tea/coffee (ask at the Porters’ Lodge for directions) and an introduction from Dr Campbell, and then have a 2-hour tour (no steep stairs) with lunch at 13.00; the visit will end around 14.30. Entry to the College is by the new entrance lodge designed by Dr Campbell in 2012 - on Silver Street, close to the bridge over the Cam. Cambridge is impossible for cars: you are strongly advised to use one of the park-and-ride facilities on the edge of town or the multi-storey car-park at Grand Arcade CB2 3QF. There are two non-stop trains each hour from King’s Cross, and regular trains from Liverpool Street, Peterborough and other towns; the station is some way from the centre of Cambridge, so a taxi from the station is advised.
