Our triennial awards

THE COMPANY'S TRIENNIAL AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN BRICKWORK, ROOF TILING AND SLATING AND CERAMIC TILING

Every three years the Worshipful Company of Tylers and Bricklayers - one of the City of London's ancient Livery Companies - makes awards to projects in the above fields. The projects submitted for the 2005 Awards were of a very high standard and the Company looks forward to this standard being maintained for the 2008 awards.

The Company's long tradition of rewarding the best craftsmanship in Brickwork, roof tiling and ceramic tiling is demonstrated through its TRIENNIAL AWARDS which were last made in 2005. These have recognized the craftsmanship in brickwork and roof tiling on buildings ranging from Battersea Power Station to modest houses; from major construction projects to minor refurbishments and re-pointing works. Excellence in ceramic tiling has ranged from that in Tottenham Court Road Underground Station to substantially smaller public and private works. The Awards are given for buildings within the area prescribed by the M25 Motorway.

The success of the Awards relies on the participation not just of architects and building owners, but also on members of the Company and the public who care about good craftsmanship - they are encouraged to nominate any buildings that they feel might qualify. The Nomination Form below can be used to propose a suitable building for an Award.

Nominations are invited for the 2008 Triennial Awards. Newbuild, refurbishment or improvement projects are eligible. They must have been completed in the three years to 15 February 2008 (the closing date for entries) and be located in the London area bounded by the M25.

Up to three Awards will be made, one for each craft in:

• Brickwork
• Slate or Tile roofing
• Applied Tiling (Faience, mosaic, vitreous or Majolica etc.) used either externally as cladding or internally as a decorative finish or for flooring)

The Owner, Architect and Foreman Craftsman Bricklayer or Tiler involved in each building selected for an award receive Certificates with the latter two each receiving a silver medal.

Judging of the Awards is carried out in two stages with regional assessors from within the Company agreeing a short list for consideration by the final jury which will include expert craftsmen.
